FLYFISHING FOR STEELHEAD

Steelhead are also know around the globe as sea-run trout. Here in British Columbia Steelhead are a prized catch for even the most experienced of fly anglers.

British Columbia Steelhead are sought after by anglers from all over the world. Anglers from USA, UK, Ireland, Scotland and Germany come to BC each year to try their luck at catching one of those elusive Steelhead on the fly.

Although we begin our steelhead fishing season in late December, water & air temperatures are still too cold for fly anglers to be reasonably succesful. As spring comes nearer our local waters begin to warm, our late run steelhead begin to arrive and fly -fishing for steelhead is at it’s best. Local rivers like the Vedder & Chehalis both have very good runs of steelhead and rivers like the Upper Pitt & Silver Hope offer less fish but a more remote setting.

The best time to to target Steelhead on the Fly is from early March through until mid May. Our largest steelhead run on the Vedder River offers a Fly Only season from May 1 – 31. This is also a good time to chase steelhead on the fly but water conditions are unpredictable. The Upper Pitt is best fished from mid March to late April and thee is always good opportunities to catch a few Bull trout while fly – fishing for Steelhead.
